Lieber alle, tut mir leid fur schreiben in English uber ein neues buch!

I'm happy to release today for free download a major chunk of what someday will be ERIC III: the section on Severus Alexander. Because there are some 300 sections in the book - some easy and some enormously tedious and complex - to prevent myself from polishing off the easiest ones first I've disciplined myself to pick the sections at random so I was kind of surprised to get S. Alexander almost immediately after getting stuck with Septimius Severus. Just those two sections have cost me I don't know how many thousands of hours of work to complete but, save for Caracalla, I've now got the bulk of the Severan period done!

Anyway, as I mentioned, I am releasing this as a standalone pdf eBook free to download from http://www.dirtyoldbooks.com/CC/index.html

While I've worked on a number of improvements in revising ERIC II the most useful I believe is the new rarity column. It is, I hope, a great step forward from how Roman Imperial rarity ratings have been given so far as we can now see something akin to "population reports"; of course, we'll never know mintage figures like we do on modern coins but if we take a wide enough slice of the marketplace across a long enough span of time we get a very good census nonetheless.

Take a look at RIC's rarity tables for denarii on Sev. Alexander and you find that most are blithely written off as common (this being, I believe, more a reflection of Cohen's data than Mattingly's own recon) but my tallying reveals a different, more nuanced story. Take as an extreme example RIC 133 & 135 (both listed as common) and we see that the latter is actually at least 300 times rarer than the former!

Having rarity listed in numbers rather than bracketed into categories allows us to see interesting patterns into how the mints operated. Look, for example, how perfectly mirrored were the Annona denarius issues nos. 152-153 and their counterparts in the sestertii 585 & 586 and you get for the first time a very definite confirmation that the mints were carefully coordinating not just their overall output but the type designs across different denominations as well.

I'm also happy to shed more light on weights which are now listed for each of the denomination in ranges with highest, lowest and average. I take the same approach with pricing as I did in ERIC II except now each and every listed variant has auction data that should prove much more helpful than shoot-from-the-hip guesstimates. Dating has been considerably tightened up too.

Finally, I've put a lot of effort into updating the plates enlarging them and scouring out the very rarest type so that they are as comprehensive as possible.

If you have any interest in this period I hope you enjoy what I've come up!

Thanks,
Ras

Das ist wirklich eine tolle Übersicht über die Ausgaben von Alexander Severus.
Zunächst herzlichen Dank an rasiel.

Aber warum finde ich die von mir letzte Woche georderte Münze nicht ?

Nach meiner Auffassung müßte es:

Bust: 10
Observe Legend: O07
Resverve Legend: R70
Typ 52 mit Stern sein

Grüße
